Breaking the rear derailleur hanger off in my very first cross race (Canton Cup) and DNF'ing. The course's boundary tape somehow found its way into my drivetrain and snapped the hanger off at the most remote part of the course. Draped in yellow “Caution” tape, I dejectedly trekked 10 minutes back through the field and bike path to my car.

The subsequent superman impersonation resulted in a fractured wrist, lots of blood, a broken bike, and extended hang-out time with Trevor in the ER.

Buried in one of my best moment's on a bike is the worst. Riding Slickrock for the first time. It's 120 degrees in the parking lot when we start on the trail. Ran out of water and stopped sweating an hour into the ride. That's the worst moment. Watching the sunset and seeing all the critters come out in the evening about an hour later; that's the best moment.

Descending a hill in Sydney trying to outrun a car, first roundabout straight through, fine. Second roundabout I remembered being the same exit angle as the first, it wasn’t. I was going to fast to get all the way round and had to bunny-hop the curb at 30mph. my back wheel hit, I exploded my rear tire and nose wheelied between a tree and a metal pillar, but made it out without a scratch.

It was more humbling that bad. I was riding the Roubaix route with Selman. We hit the first section of pave at Troisvilles and it was far, far worse than I had expected. It felt like I was riding on seriously buckled wheels, down stairs, with two flats. I shot a worried look over at Selman, [a seasoned mountain bike and cross racer] and he was smiling!! All I could think was “Oh shit, I’ve got five hours of this with someone who is finding it easy”.

Crashing near (but not on) railroad. I was concentrating so hard on crossing the tracks without slipping or crashing that I didn’t notice the path turned right after the tracks. I cleared the tracks just fine, but went off the path and biffed hard enough to crack my helmet. But I’ve never crashed on railroad tracks!

It had to be when I suffered from heatstroke (almost) while on a mountain bike ride with my friend. I think it was about 102 with stupid humidity. I ran out of water on the ride, plus I had just spent the entire day framing a deck. It took awhile to recover from that ride.

Hitting sand on a training ride and impaling myself on a guardrail. Shattered collarbone, 4 broken ribs, one collapsed lung, a fractured spleen, a helicopter ride, 7 nights in the hospital and $75,000 in medical bills was the damage (thank you Blue Cross). Kept me off the bike for 8 weeks!

1 - Events leading up to the Gary Fisher toss. 2 - My first attempt at a century with Doez. I bonked after 40 miles in the baking sun. We turned around, Doez dropped me and I rode the last 10 miles home alone. But the absolute worst day was 3 – 10 minutes into the 4 day Kokopelli trail ride, I stopped to fix my saddle height – broke my binder bolt and had to ride the first 2 days with my seatpost sunk into my frame.
